SCRIPTURE TO READ: EPHESIANS 1:1-2

MEDITATION FOR THIS WEEK

Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, to the saints who are at Ephesus and who are faithful in Christ Jesus: 2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

EPHESIANS 1:1-2

GRACE TO YOU (PART 3)
We are appeased may times to receive good results. When you put in the time, you are rightly rewarded for that time. In similar fashion, Christianity yields grand results (for one we get to be with our Lord and Savior knowing Him forever-John 17). The standing firm in the grace of God, working efficaciously in the believer; grace-living always results to peace, true peace.

In this introduction, Paul introduces to a concept he seems to emphasize in almost all his epistle greetings: grace to you produces peace in you. Be assured, practical Christianity produces ultimate peace. Jesus Christ finishes the work of sanctification in us (Philippians 1:6). God completes your walk in peace. There’s bumper-sticker out there that says, “No Christ, No peace; Know Christ, Know peace”; Ephesians it proves such a slogan to be true.

Without the grace of God, there would be no peace in the Christian life. This isn’t a peace of everything’s-going-right-in-my-life. Peace (eirene) is a peace where true tranquility is produced from the joining together of the sinner to the Savior Jesus Christ. It is then by the blood of Jesus Christ, believers come to know true peace (Romans 5:10-11). Meaning, in the trials of life, in turmoil or tribulation, it’s important the believer rest in the Lord. Here, peace reigns as our thoughts be settled on the beautiful intimacies of Jesus Christ. Paul is echoing the words of Jesus from John 14:27: “Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful” Grace is conjoined with peace and the result only magnificent. But the question you may have is, “why don’t I feel peace?” Good question, because you were not meant to feel peace all the time. Peace surpasses feeling. It results in a changed thought pattern through the teaching of grace (Titus 2:12). Peace is assurance that God is, and He will do according to the promises of Scripture. That’s the grace resulting peace. And that is absolutely a great position to understand true biblical Christianity. Praise God, next time we grasp the spiritual blessings we have in practical Christianity. God bless.

GRACE TO YOU (PART 2)
The Grace of God teaches believers are saints. I am a saint, you’re a saint; we are saints and not ‘ain’ts’. Does this imply we view ourselves as worthy of being painted on 15th Century church ceilings? Of course not, but understanding your positional sainthood can lead you into faithful practice under the Gospel.

First, we hear Paul calling the Ephesians, saints. What is a saint? In Greek the term is hagios and it stands for being set apart for a particular purpose. The term is not limited to a person’s performance or lack there of; it’s solely based on the grace of our Lord Jesus (1 Corinthians 15:10). What this signifies is every believer has purpose to fulfill under the Lord’s sovereign and divine calling. Paul was called to be an apostle; believers alike are called; for they are set apart from the world for service to Christ. Isn’t that wonderful? Is that not joyous? God is not looking down saying Paul is better because he was an apostle, or the Christian preacher is better than you minimal believer. Saint puts us all on the same level. Take for instance the Corinthians. The first Epistle to the Corinthians addresses these believers with sharp rebuke. Their church was absolute out-of-whack to say the least. Yet the Holy Spirit calls them what? Saints! (See 1st Corinthians 1:2). Wow. It does not matter where we are at in our Christian walk, God, by the blood of Jesus Christ, sees us as saints. Although this doesn’t mean we are not to be striving for righteous living.

Being a saint concludes an inward desire of consecration. If one is set apart from the rest of the world, then his inner desires should reflect the One who has set him apart. When you say you’re a Christian yet have no conviction of sin, holiness, righteousness, and truth; you do His Name disservice. Stop even identifying yourself as such if your not hungering and thirsting for righteousness(Matthew 5:6, Isaiah 55:1, John 4:14, 7:37). Paul says “saints” because saints are set apart to be different, not caring what the world feels about them. One of the highest duties of the Christian slave (who’s set apart) is to please the Master (Galatians 1:10).

Finally, being set apart resolves to faithful service. Paul adds the statement “and faithful in Christ Jesus”. Understanding the Lord will keep you in the boundaries He’s called, leads the believer to exercise faithfulness. Since being set apart for His work, you can trust the Lord! The scripture proclaims, God will lead you to His desired result (Philippians 1:6, Hebrews 7:25, 12:1-2). Trust Him, because He has set apart you as a saint for the glory of His Kingdom!!! You can hold to the promises of scripture because of this. God is faithful; and so you as a saint can trust a faithful Christ (Proverbs 3:5-6).

Remember His glorious works. Psalm 77:11 says “I shall remember the deeds of the Lord; Surely I will remember Your wonders of old.” Such adoration comes from knowing He has set you apart. Viewing sainthood as some pious religious achievement eludes the true purpose of Christ. Being a saint attributes the Lord is in control and does as He pleases. God has called you a saint, be drawn to His righteousness and faithfully trust Him! You’re a saint, not a ‘ain’t’! Amen

MEDITATION FOR THIS WEEK

Fo1Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, to the saints who are at Ephesus and who are faithful in Christ Jesus: 2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

EPHESIANS 1:1-2

GRACE TO YOU (PART 1)
If you said the name “Saul” in the early stages of the Christian religion, fear might grip you. His name was feared by some early believers because Saul was consenting church members be put to death (Acts 8:1-3). He was causing much havoc. Now, when you hear the name Paul, a comforting thought abounds. Paul, on the other hand, is known as one of the most prominent Apostles. Why, because of the Supreme Divinity ruling his life; Jesus Christ, who gracious bestowed grace upon his life to minister the Gospel to millions of Christians, even us today. Thirteen letters written by him captivate his faithfulness to Jesus. As normal literary practice, Paul is seen marvelously greeting the church and so in retrospect, his offer a key in understanding Christianity.

Why is Paul a key? How can I understand the position and practice of my walk with Jesus through Paul? Simple, he begins spelling it out for us in this opening salutation of Ephesians. Grace that comes to us resulting in peace (v2) was first active in the Apostle Paul. Oftentimes Paul exhorted believers to follow him (1 Corinthians 4:16, 11:1). So, in his introduction, we endeavor to follow him as he follows Christ. He says “Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus, by the will of God”. What does this mean? Does this mean I am an apostle called of Jesus Christ by the will of God? Is that what I must understand? No, what is necessary is Grace reveals the three things about a Christian here: KNOW YOUR CALLING, KNOW YOUR CALLER, and KNOW WHY YOUR CALLED.

Paul was called to be an apostle (Acts 9). This was a messenger elected by Jesus Christ Himself, who had physical seen Jesus, been trained by Him, and was sent to bring the message of the Gospel authenticated by signs and miracles (1 Corinthians 151-11). No Apostles exist today, for they have all died, but what they did continues on through the pages of scripture. Now, for you, that means you’re called to something which will proclaim the Gospel to the world through the church. You are called to serve, preach, teach, or minister in some capacity etc, in order to support the advancement of the Gospel. If you’re called to be a pastor, know the qualifications are specifically spelled out in scripture (e.g. Acts 20:28, 1st Timothy 3:1-7, Titus 1:5-9). Your calling can be understood as you study and mediate on the truths of the bible. Not everyone is called to the pastorate. Doesn’t matter if you speak well or have a large following, or even think it is what you’re called to; does your life meet the biblical qualifications? Yet everyone is called. For example, in Titus 2:1-10 Paul lays out great example of how Christians are to be under healthy doctrine amongst a watching Cretan society. From the older men, to slaves, and younger women, no group is left out. Be sure of your calling.

Well in order to be sure of your calling, be sure you know the Caller. Paul knew Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 2:2). Do we? Do we possess the eternal life that knows Christ and the Father (John 17:3)? When someone says they were called to be a preacher at a young age yet were in totally rebellion to Christ; this is a lie. You have to be of Jesus Christ. You must be saved to be called. You must believe in the Son (1 John 5:10-13). Without Christ, without Him dwelling on the inside of you, you are doing absolutely nothing but dung works (John 15:4-5).

Finally, you must reason it is the will of God that has called you. Grace teaches it is God’s will to call you by the name of Christ Jesus. What is the will of God? Will (thelema) is something God desires to be completed by His children. Paul’s life in Jesus was not a life made by his own. Jesus Christ made Paul’s life and therefore Paul could fulfill His calling according to the will of God (see v5, 9, 11). In such, if we don’t like what the Lord has desired for us, we must humble ourselves (James 4:6, 1 Peter 5:5). You can desire to be something all you want, and it not be the Lord’s will. How do you find out God’s will? Good question, you find it in the pages of scripture. Careful study and meditation of the Scriptures throughout your Christian walk will illuminate what God’s will is for you. No one person can tell you that, only scripture can.

Indeed, there is more depth in this subject matter that could be addressed on each of these three things. Be encouraged in knowing your walk as a Christian. Don’t be afraid to examine the life of Paul to see what your calling is, who your Caller is, and why you are called. Amen and God bless my beloved.

MEDITATION FOR THIS WEEK

For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.-EPHESIANS 2:8-10

CULTIVATING THE KEYS TO CHRISTIANITY BY GRACE
The daily difference finally returns (although they’re called daily, it’s just a catchy phrase used). The attempt is for each week to bring a devotional from scripture. In this particular series, we will be going through the book of Ephesians. Now the book of Ephesians is one powerful book, which empowers the believer to walk in the newness of life handed to him by the Lord Jesus Christ. The letter can be divided in the following manner: Chapters 1-3 focusing the believer’s position in Grace and Chapters 4-6 centralizing the believers practice in Grace. Grace is the key factor. If you want to know how to live like a Christian, you must grasp the position and practicality of God’s unmerited favor.

Let’s begin with little background concerning Ephesians. There’s no argument the letter is written by Paul (Eph. 1:1). Since the letter is not particular addressed to the Ephesians, some scholars believe it to be the an “open letter” which was circulated to the churches surrounding Asia Minor; Ephesus happening to be the first. Church history provides strong evidence Paul penned the epistle from prison to the Ephesians (Eph. 3:1). In any case, Ephesian pagan life was known for their worship of the goddess Diana. This idol was hardly a good symbol of grace. Her influence was the life of the culture. See Acts 19:23-41 to see how dedicated the people were to the goddess. For a Christian in Ephesus, they faced a culture sold out to idolatry. How were they to understand the magnificent riches given to them by the One whom Paul preached. They needed to see grace, so they could live in this society proclaiming the Gospel.

One of they key verses to Ephesians is found in Chapter 2:8-10. Here the key word ‘grace’, which is America’s buzz word, is used as foundational in understanding Christianity. You want to know who you are in Christ, how you’ve been saved, and how you walk in Him, learn grace. Chariti (χάριτί) is the Greek word for grace and it refers to the expression of God’s goodness upon undeserving sinners. GRACE is the defibrillator machine delivering the electric shock upon our lives which deserve the eternal flames of hell. The disgraced get grace? This is Christianity! Look at Titus 2:11-14 and 3:4-7. Grace is undeserved, unmerited and only given by our Lord to unworthy helpless men. Some contemplate grace as the get-out-sin-free card or the don’t-judge-me-but-give-me-grace badge, in order to live and do what they want to do. Looking at Ephesians, that’s not at all what grace encompasses. Grace teaches us who we are and how are to be. Grace is the pilot. Grace is the joy of the Christian life. It is helpful in viewing our home IN CHRIST, and fighting our spiritual warfare against the darts of the devil. Grace is the engine placed in you to get you running. Have you been examining your Christian life through your own eyes, or the lenses of grace? We evaluate ourselves by our own standards sometimes; far removed from the Word of God and the beauty of grace. May it never be! Let His favor be a key focus as we examine the keys to Christianity in Ephesians. That’s what Paul through the inspiration of God wants us to see.

Next week, we’ll examine Paul the Apostle, who was positioned firmly in Christ through the grace of our Lord. God bless, continue trusting and believing in the Word of God.
